Washington DC History
Washington D.C. was purposely built in order to serve as the permanent capital city of the country. It was planned and developed in the later half of the 18th century. Washington D.C. is home to the headquarters of the World Bank, The White House and the International Monetary fund. For a long time now, the city ahs been the core of politics along with the beautiful sightseeing landmarks and monuments located inside it.
The White House is the most popular monument in Washington D.C, being the home the presidents of America since 1800. It has thousands of visitors attracted towards it every year. In 1812, the Parliament buildings in Upper Canada were burnt as a result of which the British troops were infuriated and set the White House ablaze. Since then, the White House underwent a major restoration in its interiors. President James Monroe also added new porticos to the White House. Since the 2001 terrorist attacks, the gates have been closed for the general public, however it still has visitors drawn towards it.
Jefferson Monument is located directly to the north of White house. It was built in the honor of the former president Thomas Jefferson. In 1943, the building was completed and since then, became a popular destination for the tourists partially due to the beautiful scenario of the Potomac River.
In the honor of George Washington, the first architectural monument was built which is known as the Washington Monument. Work began in 1815 and was accomplished in 1829 with the marble structure rising 178 feet. There is an iconic statue of the former George Washington on the top of the monument. You can also enjoy the stunning view from the top of the monument.
